Building For The Homeless

Building Homes in the Favelas

Pitch

It is proven that in the favelas in Brazil there are 10 people living in a hut made from scraps of plywood and canvas. In the favelas there is a estimated 100 business and home to over 2000 residents. The people living in these areas do not know what it is like to live in a well structured and safe home. In Canada we have homes however not just any home, we have well structured, protected and safe homes. We are very lucky to have this privilege. In the favela most people are homeless or living under cheap unsafe material, considering the fact that in these area there are gangs that control the area and cause harm to the people. These people in the community face fear everyday and are in desperate need of materials and house repairs. The families living here struggle to survive through the week, he people try to maintain a lifestyle however doesn't work out because of all the violence in the area. Families are in desperate need of weather proof homes, for example in Canada when we have a thunder storm or if winds are strong we stay in our homes until it passes in the areas of the favelas when there is a thunder storm or strong winds there cheap homes made from scraps get torn apart and destroyed and in a result of this they need to start from scratch. We want to prevent this by happening by providing these families with the materials and the home repairs they need to be safe and protected.

Construction Site in Barriea du Vasco

The construction site is located in Barriera du Vasco in a little community named Uga-Uga which is the poorest area in Barriera du Vasco. This area is a vibrant and low lying community and was first settle in the 1930s. With this construction site we plan to help construct a simple yet comfortable homes for these people. These brick homes that we plan to build will consist of first a area to sleep that will also be used as a living area, kitchen area and there will be a separate washroom in a different room. A rooftop will be constructed for the the family to dry clothes and for their children to play. The goal for this project is to save peoples lives and to help them live a better life. All we need are volunteers to help construct these homes, the volunteers are not needed of any special skill just the willingness to work hard to achieve our goal as one.

Critical

The are that we will be doing construction in is the area know as Uga-Uga which was named after the popular Globo Novela who was running at the time. This area faces the greatest development challenges and conditions and thats why we chose this area. These families desperately need our help and we plan on doing just that. Did you know in the year 2000 many of these families settle in this community following a fire in the area which left hundreds homeless. These families especially the children and elderly are suffering from constant exposure to dampness and as a result these people get extremely sick. Thats why we plan to make these house weather proof to protect the people from strong winds and storms.

Global Benefits

After the project is completed and when we completed all our goals this will have a good impact on a global level. First of all it will better the reputation for the area and also attract people from other areas in the favelas to go and live there knowing that they will have a home where they will be safe and protected in. This will also attract tourist knowing that they will be safe and enjoying seeing all brazils beautiful sceneries. By more and more tourist visiting it will allow economic growth for the country. More business will open and expand the community and increase its population. If the population continues to grow there will be people from all over the world who will visit. In this situation if i was a tourist wanting to visit Barriera du Vasco I know that i would not feel safe and most likely not even go however, if i knew about how there was all these home repairs and safe places to sleep and live I would definitely love to visit such a beautiful city.

Feasibility

This project will start on March 1, 2015, staring off will organizing everything by getting all supplies and workers/volunteers ready to go. We will start building the construction site on May 1, 2015 and hopefully get the site ready by the beginning of june. The project will be running until March 1, 2016 will the hard workers/ volunteers that we have we will be determined to achieve our goals.
