Taking out the trash in Acapulco Mexico

Taking out the trash in Acapulco Mexico

Improving Equity and Sustainable Communities one step at a time!

Pitch

In Acapulco Mexico it's time to clean the recycling up off the streets and out of houses. In Acapulco there is garbage all over the streets and in neighbourhoods everywhere and it is bringing down their tourism because of the mess and the smell and is causing unsafe living conditions for many. The mayor of Acapulco has announced that they will turn to compost and recycling of the majority of the towns waste, they just need a program to be set in place. This is where our programme can help out and do exactly that. The mayor announced "Part of the solution lies in setting up dumpsters so that people won't dump illegally" that is part of what this programme is going to do as well.

This project means a lot to me because I don't think anyone should have to live in these conditions especially if there's something that can be done about. I want to really help these people who are having to live in this horrible, hot, smelly, garbage filled town and help turn it into a nice place where people can live safely and make Acapulco a place people would want to come and visit by cleaning up all of the recycling and trash from the streets. I also want to make sure that all of things that are currently going into landfills and onto the streets also polluting the water, are instead going into the recycling and being reused.

Critical need

I really want to start this project to help and develop a sustainable community in Acapulco. It's said that 60-65 tons of garbage have recently been extracted from the bays of Acapulco and most of that trash removal is during the off season and is often only taken off of the beaches and waters and hardly ever off of the streets. The most common items that are cleaned out of the bay are beer bottles and car tires and both of those items are recyclable which is the reason why I want to start this project.

Impact

Once this project is up and going other countries will see how big of a difference the recycling has made and will be wanting to make the same change in other countries. Countries often need this recycling programme after storms have hit and made a mess of the town and need help cleaning up all of the debris.

Feasibility

I'm hoping to start this project in January 2014 and have the programme up and running by January 2015. To help start this programme I have asked Busch systems, Alliance refuse trucks, Century 21 Lacunza as well as the city government to provide cheques to better the community that they are in charge of. These companies will provide the funding for this project because it's a good advertisement for the companies but also because it's bettering the city and bringing a better reputation and will bring in more tourists to Acapulco.

How much will this project cost? The total cost for this project is $9,006,500, below I have divided up what the money is going to buy.
-$1,000,000 for recycling bins
-100 truck drivers ($40.00 a week x 100 people=$4000)
-50 used recycling trucks ($160,000 x 50=$8,000,000)
-150 warehouse workers ($40.00 a week x 150 people=$6000)
-Warehouse to start recycling ($6,500.00)

Last Points

Acapulco has a population of 1,021,000 and is placed right on the ocean. The average person uses 2 kilos a day of garbage which is almost 22 million kilos a week!

  1. Brianna, I think your blog is very well Organized and was taken some serious time to think about. I think you should take a look at your Feasibility because most companies are not worth what your asking for never mind them trying to give you that much money. So fort he next blog I would think more about that. As you can see in the Knowledge section you are being marked on your Facts and I think you should try and find a couple more facts before submitting to get full marks.

  2. Overall I really enjoyed your blog and believe it was very well done. I can tell that you put a lot of time and effort into it. I liked how you took a direct quote from the mayor about the issue and one solution to solving the problem. This shows that you did a lot of research on your issue. I also liked how you used a lot of visuals/pictures to make the reader more engaged. One thing that could be improved on is that more facts about the issue could have been provided to support and prove how big of an issue this really is. Great Work!

  3. This is a very good blog overall. I think that this you have chosen a good topic, and have proven why it is a good cause. Some things that i noticed are some spelling mistakes. This is a very small issue. I enjoyed how you quoted the mayor, and provided good facts. Although there were some very good facts, i feel as if there could have been some more facts embedded into your blog. Overall very good job!
