Helping Better Kids Lives Through The Fun of Sport
Teaching Kids Ball Hockey in South Africa
Category: Education
Pitch:
Hockey is mainly played in North America but has grown to other parts of the world over time of its existence. The game of hockey has brought countries and people closer together, making for a better experience. My pitch is to bring the sport of hockey over to South Africa to teach the youth how to play a basic game of hockey. As we are doing this, we are educating the children and keeping them from getting into any trouble. During my research process, I found out that 15% of South Africa's population has a drug problem. The total population of South Africa is 51,8 million people, meaning that 7,77 million people have a drug problem. The youth of South Africa grow up into this surrounding and will probably follow, but the fun of sport can help decrease the chance of these kids making bad decisions. The location of the project will be in Cape Town, South Africa since it is the Capital of the country. The overall two main goals are to keep the youth of South Africa from getting into trouble and to educate the kids through the game of hockey.

Critical Need:
South Africa can benefit tremendously if this project is launched and goes as planned. The amount of drugs and the lifestyle that the children live around is sad. As you can see in the chart, the drugs has really become a problem in South Africa. The drug problem in South Africa has been on a continual rise, especially in the last few years. Methaqualone (Quaaludes), cocaine, marijuana (known as dagga in South Africa), and heroin are all drugs that are becoming increasingly popular. This project can help kids not to make those poor decisions and to give them hope for the future. We can teach the children that they don't have to turn to drugs because the game of hockey can give them a future or any sport at that. This also can teach kids how important teamwork is for their lives. How The Project Will Benefit The World:
If this project is an overall success, we could start to move to other countries that have problems or that are in poverty. By doing this we can help insure that the future of the country, which is the children, will be brighter and better. If this project goes global, we can help millions of kids or adults in keeping them from getting into trouble and also help educate them in how to play hockey. As we are doing this we can also help educate the more fortunate in how many kids have no chance or opportunity to play sports. Also we can help raise awareness in how they can help resolve the issue with us.Feasibility:

Last Points:
My name is Christian Monachino and I am 15 years old. I attend Bill Crothers Secondary School and I am in the 10th Grade. I play AAA hockey for the Toronto Titans and have played hockey since I was 4 years old. Last years I achieved the honor roll at Bill Crothers Secondary School for Grade 9. One day I hope I can have a job related to the game of hockey because it is something I really enjoy. This is why I decided to create this project because I know how much the sport has to offer and what benefits come with it. This is a great opportunity to better the lives of the less fortunate in the country South Africa.Interesting Information:
- School kids who use alcohol or drugs are 3 times more involved with violent crimes. (CDA)
- From 1992 – 95 the use of drugs among teenagers increased by 600%. That figure is still increasing and is now 1100%. (2007)
- The starting age of abuse is twelve and younger, and drug fealers are targeting schools. (CDA – Bayever 2009)
-
Studies show that the average age of drug dependency in South Africa to be 12 years old, and dropping.

Great job connecting hockey to your issue in South Africa. I think its great how you are trying to do something that we do at BCSS, teaching kids through sport, but in your case keeping them out of trouble. I think that your use of a graph was very good because it allowed the readers to see how much of a drug problem South Africa has.
ReplyDeleteAwesome blog, it is attractive with its great use of the pictures and colour. By reading this, it was obvious that you had a substantial amount of knowledge on your topic. Your proposal pitch was very eye catching. The facts are astounding. I thought it was a great idea to connect with the kids through your interests by using hockey to teach the kids. Your vocabulary was quite advanced and your spelling was excellent. Great job Christian!
ReplyDeleteI found this blog very interesting and creative. I like the idea of bringing ball hockey to South Africa. I also appreciate how you took your time to find sponsors and recognized them in your blog. I thought your choice of text colours were brilliant. Some things i would consider for a future blog would be trying to fix your title "Civics CCT" to your actual title. I would also recommend using a bigger font to catch the eyes of many readers. Other than that I wish you good luck. Keep up the good work!
