Education 4 Kenya

CATEGORY: Education

PITCH

Kenya, a country where Education is very poor and in need of help. I plan to build a small school with more educated teachers and cleaner educational facilities. I will supply the children with new school supplies, desks, chalkboards and uniforms. This school will be built by volunteers and Kenyan helpers in Nairobi, Kenya. Nairobi is the Capital and the largest city in Kenya, therefore I figured building a school there would be the most impactable location. Many children there are not getting needed knowledge to get a stable job for the future. With this new school, I can at least help some kids in the biggest way possible by giving them the proper education. The school will hold 600 children (grades 1-8) and this will be a colourful, happy, fun and safe place to be.

Each year 1,031,544 children in Kenya are not in school. These poor children don't even have a chance to learn or successed in life. These children have to wake up, get food, water and try to survive off what they have. The average schooling of adults is only 4.2 years, this means many Kenyans don't even have a chance to go to school and most only go for 4 years. That is really low as Canada's average schooling is 11.6 years. Kenya is a rural country and is very pour and cannot provide proper education for everyone. Their compulsory education is only 8 years. This is why they don't have highly educated people in Kenya.

Doing this project on my own really means a lot to me because I am making a difference in a great way. Building this school for 600 children and giving them all the proper tools to help them for future their needs. This will mean 600 children are able to get the proper education instead of being out on their own for the day. I may not be making a huge impact on Kenya itself, but it's a small start that i am sure will impact the children a lot..

My main two goals for this project is to build a save, fun school with higher qualified teachers and to give 600 children the proper education they need to get a job and support their future families.

CRITICAL NEED

In 2006, The Asante Africa Foundation started up a foundation that allows people from all over the world to donate towards Africa's Education because there was so little funding in Africa. Their motto is "Educating Children and Transforming Worlds." I found this website and thought it was so inspirational, looking at all they have done from 2006 to now. This program really made me want to take a stand myself and do something, but specifically for Kenya. The Asante Africa Foundation is my reasoning for starting this project. I picked Kenya because it had one of the lowest education levels, majority of the kids are out of school and they also have a very low compulsory education.

IMPACT

-This project will not only help Kenya but it can also help the world. If I can give 600 children proper education, they could one day become doctors, lawyers or politicians in their country or others

-These kids can start supporting themselves and Kenya itself one day

-One day if Kenyans continue to grow their education and start supporting Kenya they could trade with other countries

-These 600 kids could become teachers and continue to grow and make Kenya's education levels higher

FEASIBILITY

This project will begin January 2nd, 2014.

I hope to complete this project by January, 2016.

I will be asking Taylor Swift to give me money to help me get this project started.

Taylor Swift is the perfect person to provide funding for this project because she is always thinking of others and donating to all different kinds of charities. Taylor Swift makes $57 million dollars a year. In 2012, she won the most charitable celebrity with a grand total of $4 million dollars donated! She is a really loving, giving person and I think she would be 100% on board with this project.

We are asking for 4 million dollars over all. This will include the cost of building the school, all the kids school supplies, desks, school uniforms, chalkboards and qualified teachers:

300 long school desk = $4,000

School supplies = $2,400

Build whole school = 2million

20 Chalkboards = $2,600

Uniforms = $1,000

Teachers = $1million

LAST POINTS

Some additional information about Taylor Swift is that she is a 23 years old country singer. Her award for most charitable celebrity in 2012 was awarded to her by DoSomething, which then released its list of Top 20 Celebs Gone Good of 2012. Taylor was not always known for being giving but in 2012 surprised everyone and now just can't stop giving.

An interesting fact is that Kenyan parents must pay for their children to attend school. The schools are usually run by the community. Since children are not required to go to school, only the fortunate children get to go.

I am Victoria Borsellino, I attend Bill Crothers Secondary School. I am very privileged to go to this sports school, as it is the largest High School in Ontario. I had to apply to get into this school, as approximately 350 out of 1000 kids are accepted each year. Our school has one of the highest literacy rates in Ontario and I have been given this amazing opportunity to go there, so that is defiantly one of my greatest achievements! My goals for the future are to defiantly graduate from Bill Crothers with honours and get into Brock University, as well as continue to peruse my passion for volleyball. One day I hope to become a Police Officer and make a difference in the world.

  1. Well Written Blog Victoria. There was good research and detail in your pitch. There was a good amount of research done on Kenya and the Asante Africa Foundation. Good use of pictures, and well written Critical Need and Impact it convinced me that this was a project that needed to happen. A few things to look at are, in my opinion there's too much information on Taylor Swift. Two sites were about Taylor Swift and I thought that only one was needed. And a couple spelling mistakes. Other than that great job Victoria!

  2. Amazing blog Victoria! I think the photos were quite captivating and your words show your empathy towards this issue. I like how you used Taylor Swift to fund this project because often people use charities or Right To Play; it was nice to see something different. However I do agree with Megan that there is a lot of extra info on Taylor. Also, maybe to put the impact section in paragraph format would be good. Anyways, I really liked it overall and thought it was well done.

  3. Good blog overall. There are some grammatical errors and I think the critical need could have some more information about the need for the project. It was well researched , there is a lot of information in the blog. Good job.
