Helping Those in Need

Helping Those in Need

Pitch
Imagine how life would be living in a place with one of the lowest life expectancies in the world, where there is always the threat of becoming ill or sick and nobody there to help you get better.  This is what it is like for people who are living in the Democratic Republic of Congo.  For thousands of people living in Congo this threat will no longer be a problem.  This project involves building a health clinic Kinshasa, Republic of Congo.  Kinshasa is the largest province in the country with a population of around 8 000 000 people:  Around over 6 000 000 more people than the second largest province.  The Democratic Republic of Congo has one of the lowest life expectancies in the world with just the average person living to an age of just 50 years old.  The leading cause of death in Congo is Influenza and pneumonia which can be cured with a vaccination.  The two goals for this project are to treat people who are sick and to raise knowledge and awareness about influenza and pneumonia.  To me, this project gives me the chance to raise awareness about a problem that not many people are aware about, and give them the chance to help this issue out too.

Critical Need
The reasons for staring this project are to help those in need.  Congo is a less fortunate country that can use our help.  Congo has one of the worst life expectancies in the world with only life expectancy of 49.5.  Only two countries have a lower life expectancy.  The leading cause of death in Congo currently is Influenza and Pneumonia.  Over the past year 151 690 deaths have reported in Congo due to this fatal illness.  According to the American Lung Association, Influenza is caused mainly due to cold weather.  Because the average temperature is around 20-30 degrees Celsius, influenza isn’t as much of a threat as Pneumonia for the people of Congo.  They say that Pneumonia can be caused due to other viruses and bacteria.  This means that this illness can be preventable if there is medical aid from nearby medical centers.  This project can help the world by providing aid to anybody from across the world and can spread knowledge to other parts of the world about influenza and pneumonia as it is currently the world’s third highest cause of death with over a million people dying over the past year.

Feasibility
This project will begin on February 1st of 2014 and is planned to end on February 1 of 2015.  The whole project should take about a year to complete as a building will need to be built and medical equipment will need to be transported and set up.  In order to start the project the government of Congo has agreed to work with UNICEF to help fund the project.  The government funded the project to help the people of their country and provide them with medical aid.  UNICEF helped to fund the project to help those in need in Congo and provide them with health care.  It will take $500 000 to start the project.  This money will fund the building, vaccines, medical equipment, hospital beds and staff (keeping in mind more materials/ staff may need to be purchased):

Building=$300,000
Salaries (30 Staff) =$60,000
20 hospital beds= $10,000
Vaccines= $30,000
Medical equipment/ supplies=$100,000

Last Points

Congo is located in Central Africa and is divided into two; Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo.  The official language is French and there are many different ethnic groups.  Congo has had a history of crime and war and the main sports there are rugby and soccer.  Congo has a wide variety of foods and much of their economy comes from farming.  Congo is a developing nation with one of the lowest HDIs in the world.

I am 15 years old and live in Ontario, Canada.  I go to Bill Crothers Secondary School and I enjoy playing hockey.   I have had success in helping my community with different projects such as cleaning up parks, and I hope to have success in this project and help different communities that are in need.

  2. This blog is very interesting! I liked how you incorporated the titles with different colours. I felt it could use a couple more picture about the topic. Your expenses list was very clear and was very reasonable. Your spelling and grammar is great with the exception of the "Feasibility" paragraph where you forgot to put a space after the title. Other than that, your pitch was clear and concise, your facts were absolutely mind boggling, and your issue is very concerning. Great work Ryan!
