HIV/AIDS IN KENYA

Mobile HIV/AIDS Clinic in Kenya to Help Save Many Lives

 Pitch:

Life expectancy in Kenya is 63.29 years. Many Kenyans are dying due to preventable diseases. In Kenya over 1.5 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. Today 180,000 people, which are below the age of 15, have the disease. Every year there are 80,000 deaths due to HIV/AIDS in Kenya. 1.2 million children are living as orphans because of HIV/AIDS. There are many factors that lead to the high death rate and low life expectancy. The illiteracy rate in Kenya is 87.4% and the unemployment rate is 40%. We, the Marafiki volunteers want to help the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Kenya, specifically the poorest town, Turkana Central. 97% of people living in this town are poor. We are trying to raise money to build a mobile clinic that can help people with the disease, HIV/AIDS.

This project means a lot to me because I want to achieve three important goals. My first goal is to educate Kenyans on HIV/AIDS. By providing them with education, it will give Kenyans basic knowledge on HIV/AIDS and help prevent the disease from spreading. The second goal is to build a mobile HIV/AIDS clinic in Kenya. This will provide medical attention to those suffering with HIV/AIDS. The last goal is to raise money for Kenya. This money will go towards giving children education, resources for medical needs and education for young teens and adults on disease prevention.

Critical Need:

People in Kenya need to be educated on disease prevention and protective sex. The literacy rate is extremely low in Kenya, that 87.4% of the population is illiterate. Kenya is in the top 10 countries in Africa that have the HIV/AIDS disease. Education is key to teaching young teens and adults the knowledge about HIV/AIDS, as well as, helping them understand how to prevent this disease from spreading. Topics such as the dangers of unprotected sex and sharing needles need to be explained to the population. People need to understand what HIV/AIDS is and what to do if they get the disease, as well as, how to deal and cope with it. This would not put an end to HIV/AIDS, but would help to decrease the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Impact:

The mobile clinic will impact Kenya in many positive ways. The mobile clinic can carry nine or more volunteers. It can administer up to 500 tests per day, as well as, the clinic can travel to the rural communities and will stay there for 1 to 2 weeks. Hopefully, this will help decrease and educate Kenyans on the HIV/AIDS disease.

Feasibility:

The mobile clinic itself is extremely feasible;
It will launch in January of 2014;
It will end in June of 2015;
The cost of building the mobile clinic will be approximately $1.2 million;
The cost of medical resources needed on board the mobile clinic will be $5,000; and
The cost of medicine that will be on board the mobile clinic will be $15,000.

Last Points:

An AIDS-free generation is possible! Please help by making a small donation to support the mobile clinic. This will provide education and medial resources to the young teens and adults in Kenya which will help them restore their lives and hope.
