Words Can Make A Difference!

Raising Up Burkina Faso One Word At A Time!

An educational project, based in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso

Pitch

Burkina Faso, is a small West-African country located directly south of Mali, and north of Ghana. It has a population of approximately 15.75 million. It's capital and largest city, Ouagadougou, accounts for about 1.6 million of those people. Burkina Faso is a semi-presidential republic, having both a president and prime minister. It's official language is French, which is also an official Canadian language. Burkina Faso, has a very high illiteracy rate, 73.4%, which is even higher in the female population. The project will take place in Bobo-Dioulasso, the country's second largest city. Creating a school in this location, which will be open to boys and girls, as well as older students, is going to be very effective since most attention to education is placed in Ouagadougou, and all the people of Bobo-Dioulasso are too far away to benefit from educational implements in that area. It will be simple to rent a building in the heart of the city, or close to it. The inability for people to afford education is a major issue, and with this project, that is no longer a problem. Two things we hope to achieve with this project, will be the overall increase of the country's literacy rate, which will be done by targeting one of the largest cities, and giving citizens the opportunity and later on the ability to learn and become an active member of their society, and making helpful contributions to the country.

Critical Need

Burkina Faso has been noted to have the world's lowest literacy rates, obviously it is necessary for something to be done. Between 1990 and 2008, the country doubled their literacy rates, and since then has hit a plateau. This project will make the difference that the country needs. Bringing in educated volunteers that are able to teach in either French or English, will be a benefit to the project and the people.

Impact

If the literacy rates and number of educated people increase, both the quality of life and economic stature of the country will become better. Burkina Faso will be a participant in world relations, and can be more productive. Once more people are educated there will be more job opportunities for them, and as GDP increases trades throughout the globe will turn for a better financial situation, which continually allows for more people to become educated.

Feasibility

A classroom in Burkina Faso
The project has a start date of February 2014 and will continue on until June of 2016. A combination of two businesses will be funding the project. Staples, firstly they will be providing tools for students to use, such as desks, pencils, paper, and erasers. They plan on helping because of the Staples Soul organization and their foundation of "Promoting education, youth and community development around the globe." (as taken from the Staples Soul/ Staples.ca webpage). From this organization we will require a large supply.

Pencils- 2,000 24-packs x $2.00 = $4,000
Erasers-1,500 36-packs x $33.00 = $49,500
Sharpeners- 200 2-packs x $2.00 = $400
Paper- 1875 400-sheet packs x $3.75 = $7,031.25

Total = $60,931.25

Secondly, Coca-Cola, will be making a $500,000 donation for miscellaneous purchases which will include desks, water, lighting, and other. Coca-Cola will be making this donation because they have a public image of community support and a strong belief in sustainability.

In conclusion, the project will receive $560,931.25 in money and equipment.

Last Points

Burkina Faso is an amazing investment for our future, and the future of millions of Africans.

Who I Am

I am a 15 year old student of Bill Crothers Secondary School, in Unionville, Ontario. I am a girl, and I play volleyball. Some of my best achievements include making honour roll, in school, winning a gold on the 2013 Beach Volleyball Tour, and playing on an amazing  volleyball team this year. My goals include, committing to a NCAA D1 school for volleyball and playing setter, as well as being successful in school and relationships. I think it is very important that everyone receive the education they are entitled to and that we all continue to love and respect each other.

  2. Well written blog Valentina ! There was really good research and details done in your pitch. There was a lot of great statistics and information on the small town Burkina. I think your pictures and tittle were very captivating and very creative. I thought it was great that you got Staples and Coca-cola to donate as usually people do Right to play or normal donation programs. For your impact I think you could use a little more information on how this could affect the world. Other then that great, well written blog!

  3. Great blog. I love the title. I like this blog because you shared a lot of background information with the reader before getting into the topic at hand. I like how you are doing a project on a country that isn't well known. I think you could have included a few more statistics but overall, great blog!
